Summer School scholarships on 'Protecting Human Rights through United Nations Mechanisms'
The Human Rights Law Centre at the University of Nottingham is pleased to announce the 2010 Summer School on ‘Protecting Human Rights through United Nations Mechanisms’.

The Summer School will be held from 28 June – 2 July 2010 (Monday – Friday) and will be led by key experts in the field. The focus throughout will be practical and applied: the Summer School will give participants an insider’s understanding of the mechanisms and will equip them with the tools to best use the UN system for the protection of human rights.

The School will have sessions devoted to the human rights treaty bodies (the reporting and individual communications procedures), the Human Rights Council’s Universal Period Review Procedure, Special Procedures (UN human rights special rapporteurs, etc.), and the work of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and its field presences.



The Summer School is designed to benefit professionals in non-governmental organisations, national human rights institutions, government, international governmental organisations, field operations, and interested academic and students. Eligibility for Entry

* Indonesian citizen, College/University student enrolled in any institution as of April 1, 2009 (students graduating in April 2009 are eligible to join)

* Actively involved in environmental activities or projects

* Willing to travel overseas
* Should be able to work well within a group

* Employees of Bayer, their agencies or independent contractors engaged in the project

How to join
Financial crises and economic downturns spell tough times for the environment. Safeguarding the planet at a time of economic recession is often seen as a luxury, and at times, a burden on economic recovery and development. On the other hand, reality has shown that the Earth itself is what ultimately controls economic activity because it is the source of the materials upon which economic activity works..

Write your individual proposal, therefore, for a simple environmental project in your community or school which demonstrates that environmental protection and economic growth can go hand in hand.

* In no more than 100 words, describe the current situation and environmentrelated problems in your local area or school.
* Name a few practical solutions to the problem that either government/industry/NGOs or your school/community has so far carried out.
* Draw up a personal project you intend to do to help alleviate this problem, and state your objectives and deliverables.
* Indicate resource requirements like budget, manpower, facilities, as well as institutions/groups involved, making sure that all necessary resources are within your reach. Compare resources and costs with the benefits you expect to gain.
* In no more than 200 words, tell how this project can be beneficial for both the economy and the environment. Explain also why your environmental project makes economic sense.


All projects entered in this competition must begin no earlier than May 29, 2009 and end no later than August 20, 2009.
Procedures/rules

* Fill up the entry form and attach a 4x6 cm color photo of yourself.
* Attach the following documents: certificate of cumulative GPA (IPK, minimum 2.5) from your institution, copies of identification card (KTP/SIM), and proof of environmental award (if there is any) received.
* All entries must be accompanied by a project proposal. Incomplete application form and entry requirements will not be processed.
* Secure the endorsement of a faculty member OR the school academic department head OR college/university dean OR academic vice-president OR president.
* All applications should reach Bayer by May 29, 2009..
* Project proposals must be written in English and double-spaced.. Handwritten or e-mail entries will not be accepted.
* Project proposals, which are adaptations/upgrades of already existing projects are acceptable, but the entry will be judged solely on the basis of new elements introduced and their added value. Pre-existing work or accomplishments prior to the official start-up date will not be given any credit.
* Successful finalists shall be asked to begin implementing their respective projects by June 27, 2009. A premature start-up of the proposed project will be grounds for disqualification.
* While the project proposal should be the applicant’s own concept, the project itself may be carried out by any number of people, with the applicant taking significant role in its implementation.
* The project must be completed or come close to completion by September 30, 2009.
* The judges’ decision is final for all aspects of the competition.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) - Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst – supports a range of postgraduate courses at German universities which aim at providing academically educated young professionals from Developing Countries with further specialized studies. The DAAD supports these selected programs with a certain quota of scholarships and with financial assistance for a special tutoring system. At the end of the course (programs run 12 to 36 months, depending on the particular institution) participants can obtain an internationally recognized Master’s or in some courses PhD degree.

BURSARIES FOR INCORE SUMMER SCHOOL AND ROUNDTABLE (Deadline 23 April
2009)

INCORE (International Conflict Research Institute) based at the
University of Ulster in Northern Ireland, and associate site of the
United Nations University, is please to offer five bursary places for
its 10th International Summer School and roundtable on 'Evaluating
Research in Divided Societies'. The bursaries are funded by the
International Development Research Centre (IDRC). The bursaries are
specifically available for the Evaluation Module of the Summer School,
see http://www.incore.ulst.ac.uk/courses/ss/ and to attend the
'Evaluating Research in Divided Societies' Roundtable that will follow
the Summer School.

The bursaries will help widen participation in the Evaluation Summer
School Module, but are also part of the 'Evaluating Research in Divided
Societies' project which INCORE is undertaking in partnership with the
IDRC. The project considers the challenges of evaluating research in
violently divided societies, and how different evaluation methodologies
could be adapted and utilized to deal with the specific ethical,
methodological and practical challenges that research in divided
societies presents (see extended notes below).

The bursaries will cover:

1. Summer School fee
2. A return economy class flight from country of current residence
to Northern Ireland
3. Accommodation costs (including the nights of 14 June 2009
through to 23 June 2009)
4. Per diem for the week

Successful applicants will be expected to participate fully in and
attend:

1. The Summer School Evaluation Module (15-19 June 2009, arriving
14 June)
2. The 'Evaluating Research in Divided Societies' Roundtable (22-23
June 2009)

Notes: 'Evaluating Research in Divided Societies' Project

In spite of the increased funding for research in violently divided
societies in recent decades, specific frameworks for the evaluation of
this type of research do not exist. Currently, evaluation of Conflict
Prevention and Peacebuilding (CPPB) interventions in violently divided
societies is largely geared towards program evaluation, rather than
evaluation of research. Although there are many similarities between
CPPB program evaluation and evaluation of research in violently divided
societies, the differences between the two, coupled with the fact that
this research is often used to inform CPPB programming decisions,
highlight the need for research-specific evaluation frameworks to be
developed. Moreover, given the relationship of research to CPPB
programming decisions, there is a pressing need to develop
research-specific evaluation frameworks if donor organizations are to
continue to justify funding CPPB programs and activities. Therefore,
through a literature review, commissioned "think-pieces" and a
roundtable meeting of practitioners and academics whose expertise lies
in the fields in evaluation and in researching violently divided
societies, the proposed project will consider the challenges of
evaluating research in violently divided societies, and how different
evaluation methodologies could be adapted and utilised to deal with the
specific ethical, methodological and practical challenges that research
in divided societies presents.
