The Bloomsbury Colleges is a consortium of six University of London colleges comprising Birkbeck (Bbk), The Institute of Education (IoE), The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), The Royal Veterinary College (RVC), The School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) and The School of Pharmacy (SoP).


The Consortium offers twelve PhD Studentships annually, each of three year's duration, to start in October of the given year. Doctoral Position in Computational Mechanics

The successful candidate will work within a DFG-funded Emmy Noether research project on computational methods for adhesion with applications in biomechanics and composites. The aim of the project is the mechanical modelling, simulation, investigation and optimization of adhesion mechanisms as they occur for example in gecko adhesion. The topic offers a suitable doctoral project which can be completed within three years.

The requirement for this position is a diploma or masters degree in engineering, applied mathematics, physics or a similar subject. Desired are very good skills in mechanics, computational mechanics, numerical mathematics and finite element methods as well as a successful record of working independently.

The AICES graduate school was established under the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and state governments to promote novel research and training in the field of computational engineering science. The school is a collaboration of 15 university institutes, the Jülich Supercomputer Center, and the Max Planck Institute for Iron Research. Aices organizes the doctoral education of ca. 80 students, as well as about 12 independent junior research groups. AICES provides excellent computational facilities and a dynamic service team. The working language is English.

The candidate will be employed as a regular employee. The candidate must meet required personal qualifications. The position is to be filled by 01.01.2010 and is for a fixed term until December 2012. The standard weekly hours will be 39,83 hours. Salary is according to TV-L E 13.

Cranfield University, in collaboration with Airbus and the Open University, has an exciting research opportunity for a motivated graduate. This research aims to understand and model the role of residual stresses produced by the laser peening process in determining the fatigue performance obtained in aerospace structures

Laser peening is a new generation process for treating the surface of metallic engineering components to produce exceptional improvements in fatigue properties. So far the process has been applied to a limited number of aerospace components as a process of last resort. In this research the possibility of treating the relatively thin aluminium structures used in aircraft fuselages will be explored. The work will explore the improvements fatigue performance laser peening can produce in aluminium alloys, looking in particular at the benefits to structures which have been damaged in various ways during service use and maintenance operations.

If this project is successful it is possible that additional funding for more extensive research towards a PhD could be made available.

The Courant Research Centre `Poverty, Equity and Growth' at the Georg-August University Göttingen is accepting applications for two Ph.D positions. This is an interdisciplinary centre that focuses on the study of development economics, agricultural economics and statistical methods. The two PhD positions form part of the Junior Research Group on Development Economics and are expected to do collaborative research with other members of the centre. The Junior Group on Development Economics works on the theoretical and empirical investigation of a wide range of policy relevant issues. For example this group uses survey and experimental data to study participation in illegal activities, adoption of environmentally friendly technologies and redistributive preferences among others.

The selection will depend on the candidate's research potential and the research proposal. Successful candidates will be awarded a three year 1/2 TV-L 13 research position and are expected to complete a PhD program either in Economics, Agricultural Economics or Statistics. The Electrical Engineering department of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) at the University of Twente (UT) is one of the three academic institutions in Electrical Engineering in the Netherlands. The Telecommunication Engineering and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) research group is embedded in the Electrical Engineering department.

The research is part of the multidisciplinary research institute Centre for Telematics and Information Technology (www.ctit.utwente.nl).

The Telecommunication Engineering and EMC research group of EEMCS/CTIT collaborate with the Technical University Delft in the Embedded Metamaterials/Power Sandwiches project. In this project, we investigate a new approach to construct electronic systems that enables integration of power semiconductors, passive components, EMI filters and countermeasures in a "system in a package" generation of components. The Embedded Metamaterials/Power Sandwich project follows a new design approach and brings together a number of technologies:

- A new SMT-based manufacturing that lends itself for automated assembly.

- Embedded EMI filters and countermeasures (such as non-linear

resistors) in the planar substrates, using a new type of materials:

metamaterials.

- A new family of components that can be sandwiched between planar substrates, such as PCBs.

Two PhD researchers will collaborate. One PhD student will be supervised by Prof. J.A. Ferreira of the Delft University of Technology, the second PhD student will be supervised by Prof. F. Leferink and will do research on embedded EMI countermeasures using metamaterials.

The specific goals of UTwente are:

- Identify new (meta) materials that are suitable for a 3D layer-by-layer construction;

- Investigate the implementation of these materials to counteract EMI, higher reliability and lower cost.

Common goals are:

- Design and optimization from a system integration point of view paying attention to electrical, EMI and thermal performance.

- To get the industry involved in a team effort to come to a better technology platform for power electronics.

This research may result in a breakthrough in conventional way of development and production of electronic circuits. The results should become available within many possible applications. Therefore many industrial entities, small and large, from different areas, are supporting this research. These industrial entities are active in mass consumer production, automotive, high-end professional, as well as production assembly lines.

We are currently looking for a PhD researcher (4 years) who will investigate the application of (new) metamaterials in PCB technology.

You have completed a relevant university degree (MSc level) or are about to graduate in an area that is relevant to our research. You like working in a team and have intellectual curiosity and knowledge of one or more of the described topics. Your main responsibility will be to carry out research, but you will be given the opportunity to acquire some teaching experience.

We offer our PhD researchers the opportunity to broaden their knowledge by joining international exchange programs, by participating in national and international conferences and workshops, and by visiting other research institutes and universities worldwide.

Project description

The chair CAES of the University of Twente offers a job opening in the large European CATRENE project “TOETS”, on test solutions for Systems-on-Chip (SoC) and Systems-in-Package (SiP).

Our project's aim is to design dependable heterogeneous systems (SoC or SiP), which include vast digital resources, analog-digital and digital-analog blocks and (MEMS) sensors/actuators.

New CMOS technologies offer multiple embedded processors and other massive digital resources on chip. Nowadays, in heterogeneous systems, the testing of analogue and MEMS parts determine the majority of diagnosis and repair problems and costs. In safety-critical and heavy environmental condition applications, like electronics in medical and automotive applications, the dependability of these systems is of key importance.

Basic idea is to implement a high dependability of heterogeneous systems by applying both Built-In Self-Diagnostics (BISD) as well as Built-In Self-Repair

(BISR) using a combination of hardware and software, with a focus on MEMS IP (MEMS + associated MS circuits).

The planned activities are as follows:

Investigation and choice of the target heterogeneous system

Behavioural and structural modelling of MEMS IP and potential repair options

·


The anticipated environment, and subsequent fault modelling of the IPs in target system

·


Investigation of the potential reuse of vast digital resources

Heterogeneous fault simulation (VHDL-AMS) and verification of the dependable heterogeneous system via BISD and BISR.

Relation to other projects

The project will run in conjunction with two other related projects in CATRENE ”TOETS” and FES “STARS” on the design of dependable heterogeneous systems.

What we ask

Candidates should have a M.Sc. degree in preferably Electrical Engineering or Computer Science, with background in one or more of the following areas: mixed-signal circuit and system (SoC) design, mixed-signal design and test tools, MEMS, signal processing.

Candidates should be fluent in English. An interview will be part of the selection procedure.

Candidates should have good system hardware skills, but not elude software solutions.

What we offer

We offer a full-time PhD position in a dynamic and international environment. The duration of the contract is four years. The gross salary will range from € 2.042,00 in the first year to € 2.612,00 per month in the fourth year.

CREAM (Mechanistic Effect Models for Ecological Risk Assessment of Chemicals) is an EC–funded network with partners from nine European countries. The aim of CREAM is to improve ecological risk assessments of chemicals, which is highly relevant for food production and environmental safety, by using mechanistic models that explore the effects of chemicals on individuals and populations.

You will be involved in developing ecological models and accompanying experiments that will be used for model validation. Organisms ranging from aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates to mammals will be the focus of the projects, and approaches will encompass ecotoxicology, population ecology, and species interactions at various spatial scales. All projects have exciting dimensions both in basic research and application. Regular network training events will help you to develop your skills in modelling, statistical and programming methods, ecotoxicology and risk assessment, and complementary skills. Joining CREAM, you will be part of the next generation of ecological modellers with excellent career options in academia, industry, and public authorities.

Diploma
Master in Mathematics or equivalent diploma in mathematics. Students who will complete their study this year can also apply. There is no need for the candidate to speak Dutch, however a sufficient knowledge of English is required.

Offer
The scholarship is available for a period of 4 years. It consists of a first appointment of 2 years, which can be followed by a prolongation of 2 years after an evaluation of the progress of the scholarship.

Position: Early Stage Researcher/PhD Placement
Project Title: Interbank Lending and Bank Risk Measure

Project Description: The Early Stage Researcher (ESR) in this project will work on measures to restore the interbank markets that are crucial for banks’ liquidity management, but mostly dried up during the crisis. The current external risk reporting of banks lacks credibility because the reported values at risk (VaR) turned out to be very small in relation to the reported depreciations on bank assets.

The project is divided in several steps.
The first step is to find out why the reported VaR were so misleading; is it because the underlying stochastic models are ignoring systemic risks, or because the time horizon of the underlying model is too short?

Second, can VaR be sufficiently improved to credibly communicate a bank’s risk? If not, can stress tests be designed for that purpose? A more demanding approach is to combine different pieces of information that banks publish, which taken separately, might be insufficient, but when put together may be sufficient information for interbank lending. This requires research on the synergies of different pieces of information and empirical testing. This research should be of a theoretical and empirical nature.

Third, the issue of quick changes in banks’ risk through derivatives trading needs to be addressed. Should banks report these big trades or should such trades be restricted to banks with stricter equity capital requirements?

Fourth, the ESR should differentiate systematic and non-systematic risk factors in bank risk positions to provide more precise insights into potential damages of lending to another bank.

We are seeking a talented and enthusiastic research assistant or research fellow with a PhD plan or a PhD awarded in physics, mathematics, engineering, biology or computer science; prior experience in computational science and network
science is desirable but not necessary. Our project links network features of natural systems with dynamics and information propagation in systems, including epidemiological and ecological networks.

A new 3-years PhD position is immediately available at the MoS Modeling and Simulation Center, University of Örebro, Sweden under the supervision of Dr. Franziska Kluegl.

The major part of the PhD studies can be dedicated to research in the area of Learning for Model Design Support in Multi-Agent Simulation: Developing Multi-Agent Simulation Model is a challenging task that is often done in a suboptimal try and error procedure. Our idea is that it can be supported by learning and adaptive agents cooperating with a human modeler.

There are various interesting starting points for the development and application of learning agent architectures and mechanisms from Artificial Intelligence such as reinforcement learning, classification learning or evolutionary strategies. Simulated agents shall use such techniques for discovering non-valid situations, selecting interaction partners, revising decision rules, etc. The human modeler evaluates the suggestions of the learning agents or supports them by pointing to particular problematic or interesting situations. Such an interplay between learning agents and human modeler may result in an efficient model development process and finally to a valid Multi-Agent Simulation model. Ideas can be tested in interdiscilinary simulation projects for example in the area of pedestrian simulation.

In addition to interest in the topic, a strong theoretical background and solid programming skills, applicants should have the equivalent of a Masters degree in an appropriate field (for example: Intelligent Systems and Robotics, Computer Science, Physics or Applied Mathematics). It is not necessary to be familiar with the Swedish language but proficiency in written/spoken English is mandatory.

Tasks

The positions have become available through a grant from the Ministry
of Economic Affairs through the Innovation-directed Research Programme
Integrated Product Creation and Realization, for the project
"Resolving the Paradox of User-Centred Design through Flexible
Prototyping".

The project involves collaboration with the University
of Twente and several companies. The aim of the project is to develop
a suite of tools for the creation of prototypes and virtual contexts
that will be used by designers in companies to facilitate the dialogue
with users in a collaborative design process. The claim is that the
tools will enable designers in industry to conduct a more effective
and efficient design process. The project will start from existing
versions of tools for creating prototypes and contexts.

The first phase of the project consists of collecting requirements for
prototyping tools from designers in industry and an analysis of tools
and methods that are currently in use. Next, subproject A will focus
on developing one of the tools on the basis of the obtained
requirements (see http://www.vip.id.tue.nl/software.html for an
impression of the tool). Subproject B will focus on defining protocols
for the use of the tools in industry and the evaluation of the tools
vis-a-vis the requirements and the claims. (A third subproject will
take place at Twente University and will focus on a Virtual Reality
tool for creating contexts in which prototypes can be explored). Good
collaboration between the three subprojects is essential to the
success of the project.
Requirements

For subproject A we are looking for a candidate with a master’s in
Computer Science with an affinity towards user-centred design. For
subproject B we are looking for a candidate with expertise in
user-centred design methodology, for instance through a master in
applied cognitive psychology, human-computer interaction or industrial
design, and affinity with technology. Both candidates should be
teamworkers and should be open towards working in collaboration with
industry.
Appointment and Salary

The appointment is for thee and a half years. As an employee of the
university you will receive a competitive salary as well as excellent
employment conditions (including excellent sport facilities and child
care). The research in this project must be concluded with writing a
PhD thesis. A salary is offered starting at EUR 2042,- per month
(gross) in the first year and increasing up to EUR 2612,- per month
(gross) in the last year. Moreover 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end
of year allowance is provided annually. Ph.D. students at TU/e are
appointed as temporary staff members. They are exempted from payment
of tuition fees. Assistance for finding accommodation can be given.
