Global South Scholar-In-Residence Programme
The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies

The Graduate Institute is an institution of research and higher education dedicated to the cross-cutting study of international relations and development issues. It was formed in 2008 by the merger of the Graduate Institute of International Studies, Europe’s oldest institute focused on international relations (founded 1927), and the Graduate Institute of Development Studies, one of Europe’s first institutes devoted to the study of development (founded 1961). The Institute hosts a diverse and vibrant body of students and faculty. More than 800 Master’s and PhD students from all over the world (75% of our students are international students) are currently enrolled.

The Global South Scholar-In-Residence Programme
This programme aims at developing an intellectual exchange between academics from Africa, Asia and Latin America and the Institute’s faculty. Three candidates per semester will be selected to spend one semester at the Institute in order to take advantage of the programme to update their teaching curricula, participate in teaching courses, further their research projects and contribute to enriching the intellectual life of the Institute. Priority will be given to university teachers – with a preference for women and junior academics – who will seek to apply the benefits of their stay at the Institute upon returning to their own institutions.

Conditions for application
> PhD holder working as a university teacher;
> Specialization in one of the domains or disciplines of the Institute: International Affairs, Development Studies, International Law, International Economics, International Relations, International History and Politics.

Cultural Studies at Queens (CSQ) is a unique graduate program that integrates the range of theoretical and practical approaches used within Cultural Studies, and fosters scholarship in both historical and contemporary fields of research. Drawing on a range of practices, Cultural Studies researchers investigate values, beliefs and belongings, cultural processes and cultural objects, economic and social relations, institutions and identities.

Comprising 69 distinguished faculty from 21 disciplines, CSQ offers an innovative program at the M.A. and Ph.D. levels that includes opportunities for cultural production and community and activist fieldwork. Cultural Studies at Queen’s is committed to a diversity of students and faculty, to the global expertise that they bring to the cultural, social and academic fields, and to student involvement in the shaping of the program. We are home to the graduate journal Shift, as well as a student-organized open seminar series.
The program creates an intellectual environment that combines a high level of academic scholarship and an ongoing meaningful engagement with cultural and social issues relevant to local and global communities. To this end, we have options in both the M.A. and Ph.D. that allow students to become involved in various kinds of community organizations, to participate collaboratively with cultural producers or to develop their cultural practice (e.g. filmmaking, curation, performance) or to pursue community-based projects that have clear ties to the field areas of the program. The Ph.D. has been designed around four field areas: Communication, Media and Technologies; Globalization, Nationalisms and Cultural Citizenship; Social Movements; and Bodies and Identities.

Fujitsu Limited, an international leader in information technology, telecommunications, semiconductors and electronics that is headquartered in Tokyo, established the Fujitsu Scholarship to commemorate its 50th anniversary in 1985.

The Fujitsu Scholarship program is available for academic programs at JAIMS. JAIMS, located in Honolulu, Hawaii, is a nonprofit postgraduate institute established by Fujitsu in 1972. Nalanda-Sriwijaya Centre Fellowship Program 2010, ISEAS, Singapore

The Nalanda-Sriwijaya Centre of the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies
(ISEAS) in Singapore, which pursues research on historical interactions
among Asian societies and civilizations, is accepting applications from
scholars who wish to undertake research and writing in the area of
intra-Asian historical interactions during 2010. The areas of particular
interest to the Centre are detailed on the NSC website:

Preference will be given to scholars who have completed their Ph.D. degree
within the last ten years. The fellowship will be for a period of up to six months and can be commenced any time between April and December 2010.

While in residence in Singapore, the fellow is expected to complete a paper
on the proposed topic, organize or contribute to a workshop, and give a
public lecture at ISEAS. The fellowships include a monthly (all-inclusive)
stipend of SGD $6,000, and a one-off payment of SGD $1500 to cover research
costs. In addition, a round-trip economy airfare between the home country of
the researcher and Singapore will be provided.

Applicants should include with their applications a cover letter, a full CV,
two letters of reference, and a research proposal of approximately five
pages (double spaced). The proposal should discuss the issue to be
examined, a review of the relevant literature, plans for any fieldwork, and
project time frame. The preferred period for the fellowship should also be
advised.

Scope of research

This structured PhD is inspired by the need to conduct rigorous, in-depth research and analysis on the impact and outcomes of contemporary and historical crises. It is driven by a desire to inform and support policy and decision makers (inc. World Health Organisation, Foreign Office), to optimise joint working between partner organisations, and to foster increased understanding and debate within the field of humanitarianism. We will offer a flexible approach to the provision of teaching to cater for the current needs of the aid industry and prepare the next generation of crisis response researchers and practitioners. The programme will seek to engage directly with people affected by situations of ongoing conflicts and crises.

This PhD therefore reflects the need for structured forms of professional development and dynamic knowledge practices that function effectively across multiple academic and non-academic contexts. Action research and reflective practice-inspired pedagogy can respond to and influence the complex, unpredictable and shifting social, political and cultural contexts within which professional practitioners operate. The PhD will introduce students to a range of dynamic and challenging concepts and methods with which to reflect critically and constructively on their current professional experience/context. This pedagogical approach enables students' professional context to become a primary research resource.

Salford Royal PhD Research Studentship

The Salford Royal PhD studentship is funded by Undergraduate Medical Education to support research into Global Health and related matters and their place and development in the Undergraduate Medical Curriculum. In addition to their research commitments, holders of the studentship will be required to teach global health issues to medical students at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust for one half day per week.

The HCRI will award the Salford Royal PhD Research Studentship for the academic year 2009/10 (Jan 2010 start date). This studentship of £11,250 per annum consists of a maintenance award in addition to full payment of tuition fees. It will be awarded subject to satisfactory progress for a period of four years.The award holder will be expected to undertake an element of teaching or administrative work as a condition of her/his award.

Applicants for the Scholarship should hold or be expecting a First Class degree award, and/or a Distinction in a related Masters degree. Applicants who hold a good 2:1 in their first degree will be considered on merit. Applicants should include full details of any teaching experience or areas of expertise on their application form. 2010 University of Tsukuba “Tsukuba Scholarship” for undergraduate English course students

The University of Tsukuba invites applications from international students for the 2010 University of Tsukuba “Tsukuba Scholarship” as per the guidelines outlined below. The University of Tsukuba’s “English Course Program”, which will commence in the 2010 academic year, is newly established program through which international students studying at the University of Tsukuba at the undergraduate level can earn their academic degrees by taking classes only in English.


1. Purpose
The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial support for exceptional international students who are applying to enter the University of Tsukuba’s English Course Program at the undergraduate level, thereby contributing to the cultivation of people who can make future contributions to international society.

2. Application Qualifications and Conditions
Applicants for this scholarship must fulfill the following conditions:

Nationality: Applicants whose nationality is of a country other than Japan (limited to those countries with which Japan has diplomatic relations).
Applicants who fulfill the qualifications for entering the English Course Program in any of the following undergraduate schools:

Undergraduate Program of International Social Studies, School of Social and International Studies

3. Duration of Scholarship
The duration of the scholarship will be from the first month of entering the university until the end of the applicable academic year (August 2010 to March 2011). From April 2011, students may apply for other scholarships from the University of Tsukuba or from other scholarship-granting organizations or bodies.

4. Scholarship Amount Details
Travel expenses: The scholarship will pay a uniform amount of 100,000 yen for travel expenses to Japan from abroad when entering the University of Tsukuba. However, this travel expense payment is limited to those recipients who will be newly coming to Japan from abroad for the purposes of entering the University of Tsukuba.
Monthly stipend: Scholarship recipients will receive one of the following monthly stipends based on their results in the entrance examination etc.
Class 1:100,000 yen per month
Class 2: 60,000 yen per month
Enrollment fee and first-year tuition exemptions: In addition to the above noted travel expenses and monthly stipend, scholarship recipients will receive exemptions from paying their enrollment fee (a one-time only fee of 282,000 yen) and their first-year tuition (from August 2010 to March 2011, 357,200 yen), for a total of 639,200 yen.

8. Selection and Notice of Decision
Scholarship recipients will be selected based on a comprehensive assessment of their application documentation, the results of their interview (in cases where interviews are conducted for university admission), and the content of their scholarship applications. Results of the scholarship selection will be sent to all applicants for university admission together with the notice of their entrance examination results.
Please note: All information that applicants for the 2010 Tsukuba Scholarship submit on the "2010 Tsukuba Scholarship Application Form" will be held in strictest confidence and be used only for the selection of scholarship recipients.
This information will NOT be used in connection with the University of Tsukuba entrance examination or admission to the applicant's prospective undergraduate school, and this information has no bearing whatsoever on the results of the entrance examination.

9. Obligations of Scholarship Recipients
Scholarship recipients are expected to fully understand the educational purpose of the English Course Program that is conducted in their affiliated undergraduate school. Furthermore, it is expected that scholarship recipients consistently display leadership skills in educational activities undertaken with other students at the University of Tsukuba as well as any other activities.

10. Special Note
The scholarship will be revoked if any of the following situations occur:

If the scholarship recipient has falsified any part of the application documentation.
If the scholarship recipient take a leave of absence, withdraws or is expelled from his/her program of study because of disciplinary measures.
If the scholarship recipient has displayed behavior in his/her studies or lifestyle that is deemed unsuitable.

The American Research Institute of the Southern Caucasus (ARISC) announces the
availability of US graduate fellowships in support of research in the South
Caucasus (Armenia, Georgia,and/or Azerbaijan). We anticipate making four to six
awards of a maximum of $1500 each. Projects in all fields in the social
sciences and humanities are eligible. Proposals will be judged on their quality
and on the potential of the research to strengthen scholarship on the Southern

BRITISH CHEVENING AWARDS 2010/11 ARE OFFICIALLY OPEN

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), through the British Council in Indonesia, has now opened the application window for Chevening Scholarship Awards for the 2010/11 academic year. These scholarships will provide full funding for one year Masters (S2) programmes in the UK starting in September 2010.

Over the last 20 years, the Chevening programme has provided scholarships to more than a 1000 Indonesian scholars who have studied a variety of subjects ranging from journalism to environmental studies at the UK's leading Universities.

This year the Chevening Scholarship award scheme is seeking up to 20 outstanding Indonesian candidates for this prestigious award scheme. Candidates should have an excellent first degree (GPA>=3.0), at least 2 years full-time work experience , strong communication skills in both written and spoken English (IELTS 6.5) and be able to demonstrate leadership potential. Cranfield University, in collaboration with Airbus and the Open University, has an exciting research opportunity for a motivated graduate. This research aims to understand and model the role of residual stresses produced by the laser peening process in determining the fatigue performance obtained in aerospace structures

Laser peening is a new generation process for treating the surface of metallic engineering components to produce exceptional improvements in fatigue properties. So far the process has been applied to a limited number of aerospace components as a process of last resort. In this research the possibility of treating the relatively thin aluminium structures used in aircraft fuselages will be explored. The work will explore the improvements fatigue performance laser peening can produce in aluminium alloys, looking in particular at the benefits to structures which have been damaged in various ways during service use and maintenance operations.

If this project is successful it is possible that additional funding for more extensive research towards a PhD could be made available.

Technical Schools Research Students Training Programme

The successful candidate will attend Cranfield University’s ‘Technical Schools Research Students Training Programme’ which is designed to equip students with research skills required during their research studies and in their future careers. This programme consists of a series of ‘one-day events’, coupled with smaller interactive group sessions.

Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Position Available in Service Science

The European Research Institute in Service Science (ERISS, http://www.eriss.org), part of the department of Information Management, Tilburg University, The Netherlands, is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated PhD candidate to work on a exceedingly challenging, interdisciplinary research project focusing on modelling and simulating networked service systems, applying theories and models from computer science, information systems, management and business administration.

You will have the opportunity to work in an international environment and collaborate with and visit a number of high-profile researchers from universities and research institutes all over Europe.

The research project focuses on various areas including: analysis and design of interactions between service network partners, simulation of behaviour of network partners and the network, and enactment and management service networks with software services.

Candidate Profile

Courant Research Centre `Poverty, Equity and Growth in Developing and Transition Countries: Statistical Methods and Empirical Analysis'

The Courant Research Centre `Poverty, Equity and Growth' at the Georg-August University Göttingen is accepting applications for two Ph.D positions. This is an interdisciplinary centre that focuses on the study of development economics, agricultural economics and statistical methods. The two PhD positions form part of the Junior Research Group on Development Economics and are expected to do collaborative research with other members of the centre. The Junior Group on Development Economics works on the theoretical and empirical investigation of a wide range of policy relevant issues. For example this group uses survey and experimental data to study participation in illegal activities, adoption of environmentally friendly technologies and redistributive preferences among others.

The selection will depend on the candidate's research potential and the research proposal. Successful candidates will be awarded a three year 1/2 TV-L 13 research position and are expected to complete a PhD program either in Economics, Agricultural Economics or Statistics. The basic requirements include:
• A master degree in mathematics, economics, agricultural economics, demography, public policy or other closely-related fields,
• Good ability in quantitative and statistical methods;
• Good oral and written command of both German language and English. (The working language is English).
• Interest in pursuing an academic career after completing the Ph.D. degree.

The Electrical Engineering department of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) at the University of Twente (UT) is one of the three academic institutions in Electrical Engineering in the Netherlands. The Telecommunication Engineering and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) research group is embedded in the Electrical Engineering department.

The research is part of the multidisciplinary research institute Centre for Telematics and Information Technology (www.ctit.utwente.nl).

The Telecommunication Engineering and EMC research group of EEMCS/CTIT collaborate with the Technical University Delft in the Embedded Metamaterials/Power Sandwiches project. In this project, we investigate a new approach to construct electronic systems that enables integration of power semiconductors, passive components, EMI filters and countermeasures in a "system in a package" generation of components. The Embedded Metamaterials/Power Sandwich project follows a new design approach and brings together a number of technologies:

- A new SMT-based manufacturing that lends itself for automated assembly.

- Embedded EMI filters and countermeasures (such as non-linear

resistors) in the planar substrates, using a new type of materials:

metamaterials.

- A new family of components that can be sandwiched between planar substrates, such as PCBs.

Two PhD researchers will collaborate. One PhD student will be supervised by Prof. J.A. Ferreira of the Delft University of Technology, the second PhD student will be supervised by Prof. F. Leferink and will do research on embedded EMI countermeasures using metamaterials.

The specific goals of UTwente are:

- Identify new (meta) materials that are suitable for a 3D layer-by-layer construction;

- Investigate the implementation of these materials to counteract EMI, higher reliability and lower cost.

Common goals are:

- Design and optimization from a system integration point of view paying attention to electrical, EMI and thermal performance.

- To get the industry involved in a team effort to come to a better technology platform for power electronics.

This research may result in a breakthrough in conventional way of development and production of electronic circuits. The results should become available within many possible applications. Therefore many industrial entities, small and large, from different areas, are supporting this research. These industrial entities are active in mass consumer production, automotive, high-end professional, as well as production assembly lines.

We are currently looking for a PhD researcher (4 years) who will investigate the application of (new) metamaterials in PCB technology.

You have completed a relevant university degree (MSc level) or are about to graduate in an area that is relevant to our research. You like working in a team and have intellectual curiosity and knowledge of one or more of the described topics. Your main responsibility will be to carry out research, but you will be given the opportunity to acquire some teaching experience.

We offer our PhD researchers the opportunity to broaden their knowledge by joining international exchange programs, by participating in national and international conferences and workshops, and by visiting other research institutes and universities worldwide.

The monthly salary of a PhD researcher, in accordance with the Dutch universities collective labour agreement, ranges from EURO 2042,- gross in the first year to EURO 2612,- gross in the fourth year.

Position: Early Stage Researcher/PhD Placement
Project Title: Interbank Lending and Bank Risk Measure

Project Description: The Early Stage Researcher (ESR) in this project will work on measures to restore the interbank markets that are crucial for banks’ liquidity management, but mostly dried up during the crisis. The current external risk reporting of banks lacks credibility because the reported values at risk (VaR) turned out to be very small in relation to the reported depreciations on bank assets.

The project is divided in several steps.
The first step is to find out why the reported VaR were so misleading; is it because the underlying stochastic models are ignoring systemic risks, or because the time horizon of the underlying model is too short?

Second, can VaR be sufficiently improved to credibly communicate a bank’s risk? If not, can stress tests be designed for that purpose? A more demanding approach is to combine different pieces of information that banks publish, which taken separately, might be insufficient, but when put together may be sufficient information for interbank lending. This requires research on the synergies of different pieces of information and empirical testing. This research should be of a theoretical and empirical nature.

Third, the issue of quick changes in banks’ risk through derivatives trading needs to be addressed. Should banks report these big trades or should such trades be restricted to banks with stricter equity capital requirements?

Fourth, the ESR should differentiate systematic and non-systematic risk factors in bank risk positions to provide more precise insights into potential damages of lending to another bank.
